Philosophy
Our winemaking approach is informed by Burgundian tradition but tailored to the unique fruit of our vineyard and to the Carneros climate. Farming and winemaking in California have evolved to accommodate the generous growing conditions in which the grapes thrive. Where Californian winemaking previously emulated the techniques that suited the cooler climate of Burgundy, we have recently redefined tradition. Both in the vineyard and cellar, our approach acknowledges and embraces the differences between Old and New World.
Wine
The aroma of blackberry and plum compote arrive up front with deeper notes of pipe tobacco and baking spices right behind. Then the compelling roasted meats, black tea, and forest floor basso profundo signature of this wine confirm that this is a tremendous vintage of my favorite wine among all in our lineup. This is a very personal rendition of the varietal, unlike any other in California. I will sneak 3 cases into my cellar and anticipate drinking the last bottles when I turn 60. I’m 43.
Vintage
This was the third drought year in a row and the vines revealed the stress with weak shoot growth and small berries. In the micro-economy of a grapevine, adversity is often inversely proportional to quality and I love the 2009 vintage perhaps in part due to these conditions. Although winter did not afford enough rain, the growing season was quite merciful on the vines; considerate and consistent. No frosts or rain compromised bloom and set, and hardly a spike of heat singed the developing berries.
