[TASTING NOTES] This Pinot Noir opens with a brooding, savory bouquet accented with ripe plums and baked cherry pie aromas. This is a true Pinot Noir, with hints of earth and loam that tell the story of the vintage and the wine’s terroir. The wine is soft and plush on the palate, with ripe plums and concentrated black cherry flavors. The savory character of the wine is edged with dried herbs, earthiness and toasty oak.

[VINTAGE] Vintage 2010 was a relatively cool, bucolic growing season in Northern California—so much so that late in the season many growers felt the urge to drop leaves and open up the vine canopies to help boost ripening. Much to our chagrin (Mother Nature has a way of testing us in the fields), no sooner had we done this when a spike of heat—just as the grapes were coloring up—swept across the counties, sun burning berries on the vine. As a truly coastal vineyard, our Vineyard was essentially spared the heat, but the accelerated ripening made for a fast harvest for Pinot Noir in order to retain freshness of the fruit flavors.

[WINEMAKING] The warm spell at harvest convinced us to pick before freshness of fruit and acidity was lost. We picked the three blocks of the vineyard separately picking across the three Dijon clones: 115, 667 and 777. We purposely kept the fermentation temperatures low to retain liveliness of fruit. As soon as the fermentations were complete, the wines were pressed gently into 100% Kádár Tokaj oak. These barrels add a signature spiciness to our blend that compliment the fruit character of the wine. Though the wine has lower acid levels than previous vintages, we left the wine unadulterated, content with the natural balance of the resulting blend.
