[TASTING NOTES] If dry weather is what defined the vintage, then concentration defines the wine. The bouquet erupts from the glass with aromas of baked blueberry and blackberry pie. Undercurrants of smoke and meatiness keep this Syrah true to character. While rich and fleshy on the palate, the wine has appropriate acidity to also keep it fresh and lively.
[VINTAGE] The 2007 growing season brings to mind two words: "dry" and "stellar". The first of three drought years in Northern California, 2007 was marked by dry heat and winds that threatened to weaken our already stressed vines towards the end of the growing season. In response, we provided extra shade to protect the fruit from sun damage by minimizing leaf removal. In the end, the altitude of our vineyard proved key, as naturally cool evenings ultimately provided the hang time needed to gain unprecedented physiological ripeness and new levels of intensity that we never imagined possible. It was a glorious vintage.
[WINEMAKING] Our Syrah is a blend of the five clones planted on the mountainside, with each clone lending distinct character to the final blend. Hand-picked at the crack of dawn, the grapes were carefully destemmed to tank, where a warm fermentation followed to extract the brooding flavors that come with a young Syrah. The new wine was pressed at dryness and placed in our signature Kádár Hungary barrels, where it aged for 18 months. Frequent rackings in the wine's youth help release the expressive fruit character of the wine.
