Kazmer & Blaise

2002 — 90 points, Pinot Report
“Intense aromas of berry, savory spices and cumin; dense and deep … good structure and a long finish. There’s no question this is a huge Pinot. It absolutely requires the company of a big pepper steak or tri-tip roast.”

2001 — 90 points, Wine Enthusiast
“A very fine wine. It possesses its appellation's character of silky tannins, crisp acids and upfront, jammy fruit. Cherries, coffee, tobacco and herbs flood the palate.”

2000 — 92 points, Wine Enthusiast
“The wine starts with white pepper, but is distinctly Pinot-esque in the silky mouthfeel. The fruit is very pure, tantalizing, with come-hither tease, and restates the case for Carneros as serious Pinot country.”

1999 — 91 points, Wine & Spirits
“This pinot offers a blanket of fruit, soft and rich, some of it cranberry and cherry, some of it blueberry and hyper-ripe. Austere, bitter chocolate tannins keep it all in check, with acidity bringing up the juiciness of the wine long after it's gone. It leaves a pretty fruit impression, bold and fresh, a composed wine that should reward cellaring.”

1998 — 91 points, Wine & Spirits
“The polished, stony grip of this young pinot holds all its bright raspberry fruit and spice in a tight structure. The generous red fruit offers a texture as round as a Gevrey, the deep color and spiciness foretelling strong development to come.”

Red Hills Lake County comes to life, Santa Rosa Press Democrat

“In due time, OBSIDIAN RIDGE will be on the lips of big California wine value-seekers everywhere, and I'll take a little credit for it. From the Red Hills of Lake County, due north of Napa Valley. Hot summers, iron-heavy hillside vineyards & painstaking vineyard care make for robust, rich, deeply fruit, chewy wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon I am sure will be the wine of greatest demand as it is a round mound of currant, mulberry and dark chocolate in the mouth. Has a lot of tannins, but good tannins-ones that lovers of real big reds can enjoy now-tannins that will melt over time. The Syrah is an aromatic dream of super-spicy blueberry syrup and lavender. It is juicy and rich with a whisper of smoke, grilled filet and olive flavor. These are the best high-impact wines I’ve tasted for this price in quite some time.” – Daniel Dawson, Back Room Wines, Napa, CA

“This is the 2nd release from the Obsidian Ridge folks planted 2600 feet atop the Mayacamas range north of Napa Valley in the newest American Viticultural Area named the Red Hills of Lake County. Michael Terrien from Hanzell and Kazmer & Blaise is the winemaker here. Classic cedar and cassis are hallmarks of this wine. This is a mountain Cab with big, sweet fruit and abundant tannins. When we were shown this wine by our rep, we were under the mistaken impression that the price was for a 6-pack not a case. We were ready to buy it anyway. When we realized that this was a case price, we were stunned. The quality is outstanding. The price phenomenal.” – Punt Wines, San Francisco, CA
